Artist Bio

Raised along the New Jersey shore, Kim Doughty received a Bachelor of Fine Art in Crafts with a concentration in Ceramics in 2001 from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.  After graduation Kim moved to the Finger Lakes Region of NY where she was the Ceramic Technician at Corning Community.   In the spring of 2002 Kim was asked to share in the opportunity of opening up a collaborative Glass and Ceramics studio in lower DE.  In August of that same year she arrived in Dagsboro, DE.   In January of 2006 Kim opened The Artful Bean, a Coffee House and Fine Art and Craft Gallery in Bethany Beach, DE.  In April of 2007 Kim and her long time boyfriend and Glass artist Justin Cavagnaro, branched out and moved there studio to there home.  Kim has since been dividing her time between The Artful Bean and creating a unique and cohesive body of work in her new studio. 

Working mainly with porcelain accented with richly colored oxides and pigments, Kim uses both wheel throwing and hand building techniques to create a variety of utilitarian objects, concentrating on elegant form and beautiful color.  Using the centuries old technique of coiling she also creates large scale sculptures and vessels. 

Kim has chosen to make her own clay and glaze from recipes she has developed over the past ten years.  She finds taking part in every aspect of the process is key to making her work as personal and unique as possible.
